Welcome to the 2015/16 ski season at Steamboat Ski Resort! The Yampa Valley has been blessed with some great early storms this year, which has allowed us to open earlier than scheduled for the first time since the 2002/03 season. And this is just the start of a powder filled season in the Boat!
We have been waiting for this day since the mountain closed last spring. Every season of the year in Steamboat is great for one reason or another, but nothing is like winter. The feeling of floating through deep Champagne Powder or making big arcing turns down your favorite groomer provides a euphoria that can’t be duplicated. Skiing down a mountain is just simply awesome. What will this season bring? Tons of powder? Plenty of sun? Or hopefully a nice mix of both. But whatever it is, we are about to have a ton of fun.
Today the ski area opened with 1,100 vertical feet of skiing to meet all the smiling skiers and riders at the base of Christie Express early this morning. We are enjoying skiing and riding on Sitz, Jess’ Cut-Off, Sitz Back, Stampede, Vogue, Buckaroo and Desperado. It was a very cold start to the day, but that didn’t stop anyone from getting out for some fun with ear-to-ear smiles. It felt awesome to make some fast turns while enjoying the views of the surrounding Yampa Valley. I went for as many laps as I could, but eventually my early season legs told me to call it a morning. It takes quite a few days to build up those skiing muscles again, and the only way to get in shape for skiing is to, well, go skiing!
Christie Peak Express will be open today until 4 p.m. and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then we will reopen Wednesday, November 25, for Scholarship Day with riding from the gondola down and possibly even upper mountain. It looks like there is some more snow headed our way, so it’s possible we will be kicking off next week with some fresh turns. There has been a lot of hype about the El Nino winter ahead, and hopefully the snow gods will once again smile on Steamboat.
Let’s make it a great winter in Steamboat!
