It’s another powder day in the ‘Boat! Six inches fell in the last 24 hours, several of these after the mountain closed, meaning a fresh, fluffy layer is yours for the skiing this morning.
Temperatures started in the single digits and were climbing into the teens as the sun peeked over the mountain to warm things up about mid morning. I needed my extra layers and gator, and it was worth every effort to get up and on the mountain early. The light fluffy snow on top of yesterday’s powder is a little slice of heaven.
Many powder hounds were out early ripping it up this morning on Sunshine Peak. While most were carving up the groomed slopes like Sunshine Lift Line to West Side, Two ‘O Clock and Tomahawk, the cold kept the snow light and delicious, even when there were a few tracks on the runs.
I ventured into 2:30 trees and was glad to find it almost untouched. It’s always such a happy surprise to have an fresh line all the way down on one of my favorite tree runs. The snow is still soft and I didn’t feel the bottom this morning.
It was worth a short wait at the top of Sundown Express for the rope to drop, so I could race with a few other die hards for the first lines down Storm Peak Face. Those turns and the ones in 2:30 trees were my favorites of the day. It’s fun to see everyone so excited for new snow, creating sparkling snow clouds as they tear down the mountain grinning ear to ear. There’s nothing quite like this feeling and I think you know what I mean.
We had a mix of misty clouds up top and bluebird skies at mid mountain, and you’ll continue to enjoy a little of both this afternoon. There is a chance for a weak storm to bring us a few more inches tonight. As our base builds to healthy measurements of 41″ at mid mountain and 49″ at the summit, a few more will be icing on the cake.
Predicting the next storm is always fun and ski bums all seem to have their favorite weather sources. If you are riding First Tracks, you might meet our own local weatherman, Mike Weissbluth, in line. He runs a sight called Snow Alarm and will happy to give you a live forecast.
There are so many reasons why I leave Steamboat, not least of which is its amazing people. We saw Steamboat spirit in full force yesterday when hundreds gathered for Steamboat’s second- annual Women’s March down Lincoln Avenue. The theme of this year’s march was “Power to the Polls” and organizers urged everyone to use their voices in the way that matters most – with their vote. See the video and get inspired by the love and dedication of our residents. It kinda feels like a revolution.
Happy Skiing, and let it snow!
