It’s early as the gondola doors close to shut out the banter of excitement in the terminal. Encapsulated by silence, I soar up and over the freshly-groomed runs and sparkling treetops. The sun wakes the Sleeping Giant in the distance as I tighten my ski boot buckles. Overlooking the sleepy valley, I relax like I’m at the spa as I float gracefully across the sky toward Thunderhead Lodge.

I am greeted by perfect corduroy conditions on Rudi’s Run. Early season legs leave behind wavy lines through ruler straight grooming tracks. It was worth waking up with the sun because the early morning conditions on the groomed runs are perfect right now.  Sharp edges and a fresh wax glide me down to the bottom effortlessly.

The Storm Peak Express takes me higher up the mountain to 10,372 feet above the ocean waves.  Turning it up a notch on the smooth Storm Peak South, I push a little harder into the snow and focus on edging through each of my turns.  I find smooth turns here, but am careful to avoid any early season hazards poking out of the snow.

A final run down to the base has me relaxed and ready for the rest of my day in paradise. I am so proud of our fans of Steamboat Resort and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club who raised a record $84,890 on Scholarship Day so that more families in Routt County can participate in the Club’s athletic and educational programs.  Way to go! There’s a chance of snow in the forecast over the next several days, so stay turned to the Straight Talk blog for the most up-to-date conditions.

See you on the slopes,

Meghan Lutterman, Alpine skier
