Hey Justin, 45 inches is true, but during the day, for the last few weeks, it has been really nice weather, which means the snow (45 inches) melts...also, my understanding is that their has been quite a temperature inversion lately, which has not made for good snow making up top.
On a positive note, I heard rumors that more runs would be open by this weekend.

nooooooooooooooooooooo because we have a 1 week ski trip there so if they dont open up the upper mountain we will been doom for 1 week there =[ pray for more snow. how much more snow do you think we need so they can open more ?

The good news is more snow is forecasted the next few days. One thing to keep in mind though is even if it suddenly dumps 4 feet of snow over the next week that doesn't mean the whole mountain is open for business the very next day. The mountain is always opened in a very incremental approach based on snow, grooming/readying the trails for safety, incremental hiring of staffing to work the lifts\mountain shops, etc. The bottom line is I would assume Steamboat does have a master plan for opening, but being a privately held company that info is on a "need to know" top-secret basis. We generaly know that they aim to have most of the mountain open by the Christmas timeframe - you just don't know the incremental details of the opening plan for those weeks leading up to Christmas. In the early seaan you basically just show up each day with your fingers crossed for a few new runs!

Now, on a positive note, early season sking in the boat, regardless if there is only a small number of trails open, is awesome because of the few people on the trails. If the mountain can get to the point of opening up 40 or so trails you will indeed find yourself completely alone on some of the trails.

I have a grooming report from 12/4/07. The Preview, Christie, Thunderhead and B.C. lifts were running.

Arc, Boulavard, Feather, Flat Out, Giggle Gulch (lower), Main Drag, Park Lane, Preivew, Short Cut, So What, Stampede, Why Not, Yoo Hoo, Betwixt, Eagles Nest, Ego, Rainbow (lower), Rudi's, Skyline, Vagabond, Norther, Surprise (upper) and White out were open. (interestingly not See Ya, See Me)

I would suspect it will look similar in the next few days. Throughout the course of the next couple of weeks I would guess you will likely see the bulk of the mountain opening up in pieces leading up to the Christmas Holiday. That is assuming the weather does its job.

As for an answer to your question of what will be open December 14th, That is cutting it kinda close. The Gondola should be up and running, not sure about Storm and Sundown. I think alot has to do with the weather in the next two weeks. With some luck you may get to the top.

A definitive answer: 800 acres including Gondy and Storm this weekend. Enjoy.

The Gondy and Storm peak are both planned to be open this weekend. Check out the post by Mike Lane, Steamboat's Director of Public Relations.

You rock, James. How great to have the inside line here without having to wade through so much other media. I can't tell you how much whining went on last year without much answer from "the mountain". SBK could only do so much to tame the restless.

Thanks

I wasn't going to join this forum, but after this post I had too. I share the same concern you do. I will be there Dec 11 and the Gondala better be open. If the snow is not there, that's one thing, but I have heard a rumor that due to lack of people, they have not opened the upper mountain to save money. I hope this is not the case. I am going to share the world of snowboarding with my girlfriend for the first time this trip and one of the coolest things about the sport is going to the top..:) I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Steve, check out the post two above yours. I put it up yesterday and it has a link to a detailed explanation of how we're opening up to 800 acres this we... (from about 40 acres) and are planning to have the Gondy and Storm Peak Express rockin'. I've heard that the conditions on Buddy's are amazing right now, though it won't be open to the public for two or three more days.

Thought I'd post an update after we return. Promontory is a hike to the hill but we found we could carry our skis slightly up hill and get to the access run down to the gondola/Christy Peak Express. After a bit of searching, we also found a way to s…
