is it time for the snow dancing to start? I am getting anxious for those mountains to turn white. think snow will start soon? i want a lot for Christmas, i haven't had a white Christmas in many years! sf
For all the years I have lived in the Yampa Valley it seems that Halloween is when the snow really starts to fly. We always have an occasional snow fall here and there throughout October but it doesn't really start to snow hard until then. Lucky for us we have some of the best snow making crews around and Mother Nature seems to favor us as well so we always have a good base for opening day. And no need to even worry about Christmas - we always have plenty by then.
I wouldn't hold my breath too much on the mountains to start turning white anytime soon and staying around for a while. Yes, you all may see snow this week and the occasional snow event between now and say the start of November. But, from my recent past rememberings...the snow doesn't really start to come down much until November/December. Then again, what do I know..I'm just an Okie/Texas Transplant...
As they say in the securities prospectus "Past results are no guarantee of future performance", but.....
Buffalo Pass has over 30" right now and there is snow on Storm Peak. And A-Basin and Loveland have been open for over a week, their earliest opening ever.
However it is still pretty warm here, so no chance for the snow making crews to crank up yet.

I second Halloween - that seems to be the typical date for snow to start sticking around town. My hopes for any more mountain biking are usual done for by then, but who cares. Sking is just around the corner.
Lookin at the weather models right now...nothing is screaming "BIG SNOW STORM" just quite yet between now and say the middle of next week. Maybe the occasional snow shower event for higher elevations and what not could occur.. but.. nothing big. Perhaps there "might" be something that develops late next week in The West Coast..but..that's still too far out to get my hopes on ...
I'ts here!!! Woke up to tons of snow this morning. Yippee! Two storms are expected to roll through Steamboat over the weekend - just in time (as usual!!)
i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.
Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.
Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.
I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)
I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
