Any idea when the Pony Express lift will be opening in 2012?

Everyone wants to know this, but why haven't we heard anything from Steamboat?  How much snow is needed to open that area?

When the Pioneer ridge area was opened, it was left in a more "natural" state with little clearing or grading. Thus it takes a lot of snow to cover the trails and tree stumps etc. The trails are also a lot narrower so what snow is there gets scraped a lot.

I would guess it will take at least a base of over 50-60 inches before it opens. Myself, I never go there unless there was a big dump. Plenty of other spaces with better snow.

Ski corp probably only announce an opening a day or so before since weather guessing is just that, guessing.

Right from the VP of development. He was making a presentation of the development plans to get feedback from the community. Great plan but it is for the next 10 years.

He did say that Pioneer Ridge is close to opening and if they get the forecasted snow from the next storm Thursday, they will be opening the area for skiing.

Thanks for the info, that's what I was hoping to hear. We are going to be in SS in about ten days. Last year was my first trip there and we didn't discover the pioneer ridge area until the last day of our trip.
Not enough snow out of the storm last night to open today but very bit helps.

Pioneer Ridge now open as "hike to" access but Pony lift still closed.

Can you reach this area by skiing down from the top of Mt. Werner, via "No Names" and "Last Chance" or am I being fooled by the digital map?

You can hike up from Last Chance or Flying Z gulch (via half hitch).   (the operative word is "up")  Bring your lungs.

Pony lift finally opened today!!!  Great powder day.  Still some rocks poking thru on a few runs but it was wonderful finally skiing Pioneer Ridge again!
