Hello - We will be arriveing on Tuesday 3/10 and staying through the weekend. According to weather.com the expected highs are 33,36,39,41 for Wed through Sat. Sunny all days. Will the bottom of the mountain get real mashed potatoey (sp?) - I am from the mid west, never skied in CO before and here above freezing usually means slushie before days end.
Spring skiing is great. Nothing like being on the snow in a t-shirt. Yeah, when it is warm and sunny, the bottom turns into elephant snot. The good news is that you can stay up high on the mountain and the conditions are great. At the end of the day you have a choice: Ski down through the mush/ice (may I suggest upper and lower valley view), or just hop on the gondy. Either way is a winner.
I don't want to jinx it, but we might be getting a dumping thru tomorrow night. If you get here early enough tomorrow, 3/10, head right for the slopes and get a few classic Steamboat powder runs. The snow quality should be great for the rest of the week. As jg atl wisely said, if it's too slushy at the bottom, take the gondi down... I certainly do during warm spring conditions.
Over the last few days, the bottom of the mountain has not been becoming 'mashed potatoey' so much as 'corney'... little ball bearings that get pushed around. I guess I might be splitting culinary hairs here... but when I think of potatoey conditions, I think of my deck becoming suctioned to the surface of the snow. My recent experience has been more of rolling over the end of day piles... not too sticky at all.
Sorry it took so long to add this....I have been recovering, "the Boat" is one fun town. The snow and weather were actually great. we skied the bottom of the mountain in the morning and stayed up top all afternoon. It was better than I could have ever expected. Already making my plans for next year..........Thanks again for everyone's input......
