So Ive been reading about all the epic dumps this year, and all the fabulous tree skiing, my question is: is anyone aware of any tree well incidents this year yet?.... or is that something that typically happens later in the season?

its not just me then thats aware of these hazards.. if i could show you on a map where the creek runs through the tomahawk map i would but i dont want to get it wrong and mislead anyone..any offers of popping it up..would be quite handy methinks as there are several nasties in those trees that warrant care..

That's a very good tip. Maybe steamboat personnel should have it drawn on the map for the daily report map at the base.
It'd be easy to do if they are GPS trained. With GPS, heck, any steamboat person cruising the mountain, sees something of potential danger. Stands next to it, pushes a button to add to the GPS unit. When they get back later that day, it'd be just one click of a button to download it (to submeter accuracy) and add it to the GPS'd mountain map. Nothing could be easier, and potential save lives, or minimally ACLs, tibs/fibs, and tendons
Kup,
A quick suggestion for your kids. Last year I momentarily "lost" my 9 year old in the middle of a run with no trees around. I went right past him while he was in the snow and I wound up at the Sundown lift looking for him. Needless to say I went straight to panic mode when I couldn't find him. The ski patrol was awesome and they calmly put me on a snowmobile with them and went back where I saw him last. He was standing there equally scared because he couldn't find me.
My tip... Both of my sons now have whistles clipped to their ski jackets. I told them if they need help just blow that whistle until I get there. They also have cell phones but they could be hard to use in a tough situation.

Thanks for the tip Allen!. Yes, whistles are on my 'shopping list' for us to bring there. Of course, since I'm much worse than my teenage boys, it'll likely be ME calling out for THEM ;-) I guess until I get there, I cant fathom the size of the ski area. I think the biggest resort Ive been to has like 250 skiable acres. It'll be a treat and I cant wait - 39 days and counting!!!
I have always carried a whistle on my pass lanyard. When you are in the trees, any sound, especially your voice, gets extremely muffled by the snow and branches. A whistle can be heard for very long distances. You can get "freeze proof" varieties but my old referee whistle works fine.
Thought I'd post an update after we return. Promontory is a hike to the hill but we found we could carry our skis slightly up hill and get to the access run down to the gondola/Christy Peak Express. After a bit of searching, we also found a way to s…
