I'm looking at the map and I see that the trails from the top of Sunshine Peak all lead to the right towards Sundown Express or Sunshine Express. I also see the Duster trail that looks like it cuts across to the left side of the map. But I cannot tell the direction of Duster. Does it go to the left or right as I am looking at the map? Broadway looks like it might go to the left from South Peak to Thunderhead.
This is a long-winded way to ask - Is there a way to get from the top of Sunshine Peak to the base of the Gondola without stopping and without going on blacks?

thanks for the tip KC! yes, from the video I saw on line, Tomahawk definitely looked 'do-able' to my level. Again, there are two things I want from this trip. One is to make it to the top and have a viable way to the bottom, and two is to not be stuck halfway down the mountain and stuck at the top of a black - at which time I soil by skipants.

There's another way to get down from the top of Sunshine Peak by skiing past the bottom of the Sunshine Express on Tomahawk, Flintlock, etc to the South Peak Lift. Take that and ski straight ahead until you see Broadway on your left.
Broadway to the Elkhead lift and then to either Heavenly Daze or skate/walk up to the Gondola and ride it down. I often suggest that to people who might be a bit tired. I usually take the Gondy down late in the season when the bottom turns to slush.
Duster is only good for snowmobiles and the Snowshoe tours to Ragnar's for Lunch and the Cat pulled sleds for evening dinner at Ragnar's. It does have one other benefit of being a break half way down Three O'Clock.
If you take Elkhead lift up, you can take Tower down (and round to the right) to Rudi's Run.
From there you can either ski down past Storm Peak Lift and onto BC Ski Way (very pretty) to Right-of-Way. OR (my favourite if I am getting tired) cut across the top of Rudi's Run and follow the little road to Vagabond (reaches Vagabond midway down the first section/pitch), take Vagabond down to Betwixt, Betwixt down to Eagles Nest, through to Giggle Gulch and Roght-of-Way.
I think the runs at Steamboat are pretty conservatively marked. I find some of the blues are a bit flat compared to other resorts I have skied. Specifically, the blue runs in the Sunshine Express area I consider green/blue level (exceptions being High Noon and One O'Clock). Other examples of runs that I think are more "true" blue runs would be Buddy's, Tornado Lane, Rainbow, Heavenly Daze, Vagabond and Vogue. If you can handle all of the aforementioned runs then you would also likely be able all of the blue/black runs (**when groomed*). Always better to err on the side of caution when marking slopes though.
After posting this, I do believe I replyed to the wrong thread...... oops. This should have be in the Easy Blues thread.
Stay off Duster, you will work harder on Duster than a Black run, due to the flatness. We take Braodway (and there's another Green that I don't see on the map) to Elkhead, then ski down to Thunderhead or the Gondola.
Be sure to take advantage of the chance to catch some air the "easy and old person way" at the Sunbeam Terrain Park where you will find no crazy boarders, rails or moguls, only 3 or 4 simple and wide hills/bumps. Run two or three laps off the South Peak lift, and tell your friends back home how you were jumping left and right in the Rockies! Have fun and be safe (this place is safe)
I don"t know if any of these answers helped you out but this might. If you go to the thread "Ariel photo's of resort in winter" you will see someone posted a 3D map of the mountain that is just great. You can move it around and see just how the lay of the trails are on the mountain. Best thing since sliced bread...anyway I believe the true answer to your question is no, not really, but there are always ways around IF you want to work that hard at it.
Kevin,
You will encounter blue/black terrain in order to achieve a top of Sunshine to the bottom of the Gondi run but it is doable although, without guidence or knowledge of the fall lines of the different peaks you will most likely make a couple of wrong turns which will require more lift rides.
The advice of others to use Southpeak and Broadway to the Elk Head chair is best, once off the chair you will see to your left the Thunderhead building and can descend via several routes but the ones offered by Boo Boo are the most pleasant.
Heavenly Daze can cause heartburn late in the day.
Depending on conditions, Heavenly Daze can get very churned up: big push piles contrasting with slick hard packed bits. Plus a LOT of people use it to get down (even if it is a little beyond their ability): it can resemble a WW1 battlefield sometimes (bodies strewn right across it)... :-(
Heavenly Daze is a WONDERFUL run, though (one of my favourites): best experienced early - when it is perfectly groomed and there isn't anyone about :-)
Thanks! It is still better than anything you get in North Carolina. I'm hoping you have some late dumps as well. Last year was amazing! But either way we'll have a good time! I called Steamboat Snowmobile and they sounded optomistic about being able…
It will all depend on the weather the next few weeks. The snow fall has been on the thin side this season, but conditions are pretty good at the moment. (Weird windy weather today, which has kept the lifts from opening.) If it warms up a lot, it may…
So coming to ski the last week of the season. Can't beat the ticket deal with Springalicious. We were there last year the week before the deal and had so much snow! It was awesome.Just curious how the snow fall has ended up this year compared to las…
Spring Forward!
It's that time of the year- our clocks more forward, weather is
unpredictable and the wind tends to move a little faster. All three
happened this morning as skiers in Steamboat slept in. Not sure if it
was the time change or a Bud L…

Today is another perfect blue bird day here in the Boat. With the fresh snow that we received yesterday, the groomers were in great condition this morning. The perfect lines of corduroy are everywhere on the mountain, and it was hard to decide where…
WOW, what a day riding at Steamboat March 9th. 9:30 We went looking for Motos but found they were all covered
with 10" of powder. I know they now have a Snowbike with fat powder skis but I rode my new F6 instead.
We started on Pony Express because o…
If you are 50+ you could join up with the free Over the Hill Gang ski along program. They ski blues and groomed blacks and if their are some who want to handle some bumps and trees, you can do that as well. The Gang meets near the Chuck Wagon in Gon…
