Steamboat

Your vacation planning community

Just a reminder for you folks who are lucky enough to ski at least 6 days. August 14 is the deadline to purchase Super Value Passes at the lowest possible rate. You don't save much for 6 days (10 day SVP is $529 adult vs $552 for 6 of 8) but if your ski days are greater then you save substantially. Plus, you get a souvenir photo pass. One drawback is that the Kids Ski Free deal doesn't work with the pass. You have to ski at least 8 days and have your child in ski school for at least 5 days to save anything at all. (Super Value Passes give a 25% discount on ski/snowboard school-- excluding Privates). There are other discounts with the SVP to consider, too. Check it out.

we were able to get the RMSP that gives you 6 free days at Steamboat and season pass at Winter Park and Copper ffor 399.00. it was a great deal for us cause we will be in Steamboat 7 days at Christmas. also gives us a chance to ski Copper in March for a long weekend. When are you going out to Steamboat this year? sf

We bought 15 day passes when we were out in July. Great deal! I usually only buy a 10 day pass, but this year, I figured that even if I only skied 12 or 13 days I would come out ahead. We'll be out for a couple of weeks over Christmas and then again for a week in March. Patti, maybe we can meet up over Christmas! Trudy, glad to see you back on the forum!

Hi, Patti! Nice to see everyone's still coming to the Boat. Hopefully we will be in there for 10 days Jan. 14-24 spanning the week with Martin Lurther King Day holiday. That's the only week that works what with school testing and rules and so forth. This will be our 3rd MLK week and we've seen all the types of weather you can imagine from the deepest freeze to complete powder to last year's AMAZING sunshine-y mild days.

I bet it's terrific there at Christmas. Our paths one day may cross...

we choose this year because our adult children are childless (not my choice, i want to be a granny!), but we figure this will be our only year to have them to ourselves and their spouses before they start their family traditions. this is my year to have off at the hospital so here we go. my kids still remember their holidays at Steamboat. you are building wonderful times for your young family. they will never forget. have fun maybe one year we will cross paths!

That's exactly why no matter how far away and foreign to me anything winter related feels from my vantage point right here right now in 90 degree weather I've started to force myself to focus on January in Steamboat. Thanks for the bittersweet view from the future. Already my kids (ages 9 & 7) with only one very special annual winter trip to Steamboat have claimed it as their own favorite place in the world. They have traveled quite a bit in their short lives so that's not an exaggeration. I agree whole heartedly.

Trudy,

I wish you wouldn't talk about your cool 90 dergree days. Here is Austin, we finally had a couple of days under 100. I thing we have had a total of over 30, 100 plus days this summer.
Boy am I dreaming of snow.

I said the same thing to a cousin of mine in San Diego who was complaining about 30% humidity! As the saying goes, they can always hurt you more. Phew!

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)

I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
