Sounds dumb for in the mts but is there ever tornadoes?

No tornadoes that I've ever heard of, But there are some really nasty thunderstorms. Why do you think they named the peaks: Thunderhead and Storm Peak.

There are only tornados on Storm Peak in the winter.

We did have freak windstorm back in 1997 that knocked down over 20000 acres of trees in the Mt Zirkel Wilderness Area. Trees were stacked over 30 feet tall in some places.

Tornados are fairly common on the plains of eastern Colorado, but to my knowledge are unknown in the mountainous sections.

Believe it or not, tornadoes have been reported in almost every Colorado county at some time in the past.
The recorded tornadoes in Routt County were in 1980 and 1995, tho' not in Steamboat itself.
