the reson we keep going back is it feels like HOME. i have met people from all over the world there and my kids (who are adults now ) learned to ski there and they love it. even now they ask are we going to steambot this year. they never ask to go any where else, and we have been to vail, copper, breck, but steamboat is home. easy to get to, reasonable in cost and the people who actually live there are great. why ruin a good thing?
My wife and I will be coming back around New Years. Last season was the first time we have ever skied and knew we wanted to come back then. We really liked the mountain and had a great time with everything we did. Our ski instructor was outstanding and I am looking forward to scaring my wife again this year!
We like the atmosphere and there are just so many thing to do.
Trudeska makes a great statement on variety and emotional ties, we have skied Europe, Canada and the States and there is a little part of me that says lets go somewhere new, but the pull to come back is to strong, especially now we are part of this virtual community.
There have been some great comments on this thread it must be saving the Steamboat marketing people some shillings (or dollars) in research.
This February will be my third year in a row coming to Steamboat. So far, it's the only western resort I've skiied. When I first decided to come 2 years ago, I had thought I'd like to try a new western location each year. But I keep coming back to Steamboat because it's unpretentious, is a "real town" as opposed to one manufactured around the mountain, easy to get around, friendly locals/visitors, relatively uncrowded trails. Plus, there is something to be said for having familiarity with a place-- when you go to a new mountain you have to spend a fair amount of time getting to know the layout, the relative difficulty of the trails etc.
the year we went to Steamboat...I'd tried skiing about 3 times and wasn't really a fan...but thought I'd give it one more shot. We picked Steamboat to use airline miles for a family vacation and it seemed that we wouldn't need a car.
I came with the attitude of "This will be the last ski trip I take"
I come back every year... this will be our 5th time! (had to skip last year's trip since my daughter was born the week before we take the big trip)
It's such a friendly place, the slopes are easy, the people we meet are nice and friendly. I'VE NEVER FALLEN OFF A LIFT IN STEAMBOAT!!! Can't say that about the other places. I actually learned how to ski here. We love the access to the slopes and the ease of which we get around town, we don't need a car, did I mention how everyone is so friendly? It just feels like home. I hope it still feels the same after the changes.
We decided to go to Steamboat because of the direct flight from Atlanta. After cancelled flights from Denver to Gunnison in 2007, and cancelled flights from Houston to Gunnison, then Chicago to Denver, then Denver to Gunnison last year (did I mention we had no luggage, one member got the flu, one member had altitude sickness, the refrigerator went out) We decided to get a direct flight this year, and Steamboat won. I hope it is a great trip this February. We have heard so many great things about Steamboat, can't wait to get there.
It really makes the travel part of the trip easy! Of course weather can always cause a problem, and it has already closed the Hayden airport at least once this season.
You will not regret your choice. Have a great trip!
We first came with a group of friends in 1986 as they had access to a condo in the first set of Storm Meadows condos. The wife really wanted to try some real slopes, having skiied the slopes of North Carolina only. Boy what a difference eh! She loved it and we came back in 1988 and have been here every year since.
The access from the airport really isn't any problem and the distance very reasonable. Booking everything and anything you need via Steamboat central or by yourself is a simple matter and then all that is left is to enjoy the personal touch of the friendliness of the locals. Even the temporary staff from around the world make it interesting and a joy.
Like Mike (Skipompey) I have enjoyed skiing in many different countries and the only thing I really miss are the wide open bowls and skiing above the tree line, as found in some EU locations.
As long as the owners of the resort pay attention to what makes this place tick and do NOT lose sight of it then we will return again and again.
I can find flash and flamboyance everywhere and anywhere, Steamboat has a unique family flavour and feel, that is the real difference, long may it continue.
Before children, we skied all over the NE, Colorado, and Utah. For our first trip with kids on skis, numerous people suggested Steamboat as a great family place. We started when our oldest was in 1st grade and the youngest an infant. The oldest is now in college and we STILL always come back. Because Steamboat is such a real place, as opposed to simply a resort, we have real relationships with people here. Our children have favorite instructors, friends from ski weeks, must-go-to restaurants and activities, etc., so we look forward almost as much to seeing them as we do to skiing the mountain. We finally broke down and bought a condo, so now we come in summer, too! We are starting to worry that we may have fostered the makings of several future ski bums in our family...
For me being from Texas with limited skiing ability it comes down to the consist good snow ( makes me ski better than I am) . Also got to love the exceptional terrain and glading of the Boat. Not to be found elsewhere!? Plug in ski/in/out, basearea, easy access, great town, fun people/locals. Hope this never changes!!!!! Boat=10 Rest= 8 at best.
If you are 50+ you could join up with the free Over the Hill Gang ski along program. They ski blues and groomed blacks and if their are some who want to handle some bumps and trees, you can do that as well. The Gang meets near the Chuck Wagon in Gon…
Hey Andrew,
Thank you for the tip, in the right direction. Most of the time on family ski vacations, without my ski buddies on the scene I always end up skiing alone, which means I ski very lazy at times.....I have always loved skiing with a pack,so…
Hey Laura,
Thank you for the real world advice on kids with poles......The more i think about it, you are 100% correct about their stance being hard to fix, after picking up bad pole habits. The more I think about it,the only time I saw some kids the…
Thanks so much for your interest in our products. The mens club program was designed with the all conditions all terrain idea in mind and in my experience they tend to ski quite a bit off piste. I think a better way for you to go if you want to go o…
What a wonderful time in Steamboat: the conditions last week may not have been up to Steamboat standards, but they were awesome to me:
I haven't skied in at least 5 years, 7 years since I was last at the boat:
Day 1...nice groom runs to get my leg…
Matt does rock (and Dave does too). My 4 year old was doing bumps, blue blacks, and glades after these 2 great instructors ran him and a couple of other rowdy boys all over the mountain. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
Not many people realize that very often March can be one of our biggest snow months of the season. I believe that today's conditions were no exception! As I approached the Gondola to make my way up the mountain, the first thing I noticed was the lay…
