I was getting all set for a quiet, within reason, 10 days in Steamboat. Feb 1/2 term (UK) when hoepfully all those who were into skiing would be hitting the Alps so France, Italy and Austria would be jammed. Then Friday night disaster, in one of the freebie commuter papers a full page spread on Steamboat, with pictures and everything. Looks like the rockies might get a mini British invasion.
If you check out the latest Daily Mail Ski Mag, you will also find a good report on Steamboat, but I expect the negative reports on the $ will keep the numbers down, frett not.
We used to come over at half term to Steamboat, the only problem then was the clash with Presidents Day,
even then the crowds were nothing compared to Europe.
I am going to be a head in the sand merchant for the next couple of months, we will just have to stay in and save the pennies. When we arrive it will be into the City Market, stock up with groceries and see what $ we have left for shopping.
I saw the article in the Daily Mail Ski Magazine too. I have seen some GREAT publicity for Steamboat over the past month or two: their publicity people are doing some good work :-)
Ski holidays anywhere are not hugely attractive, due to the exchange rate (both against the dollar and the euro) at the moment for us Brits... BUT I think that "cost of living" (food, drink etc) is still cheaper in the USA than in Europe: so Steamboat has that in it's favour.
We alsways bump into a "Brit or two" when at Steamboat, but not many at all: not like Banff or Whistler (which seems to be all Brits!). I think that there are two main reasons for that: firstly that the bigger UK tour operators don't feature Steamboat that heavily (unless things have changed very recently - they certainly used to only offer about 4/6 different accomodation options), secondly the transfer time from Denver (the closest airport offering a non-stop flight from the UK).
More and more people travel independently these days (like us), though, so hopefully more will discover Steamboat (but not toooooo many! ;-) ).
I heard about Steamboat several years ago. One of my aunts, who was a skier had a friend who went to Steamboat. I have waited a while to get there. If it's as good as you old hands keep saying I will definitley be back. Just depends on a straw poll with the kids when we get there.
My gf is a skier, she even worked in Austria and France for several seasons, but has only skied once in the States. I guess that people only see what's convenient and miss the good stuff that takes a little time and effort.
I had a look at several of the Colarado resorts, my Dad skied Brecks in the old days when skies were straight, though they'd stopped using wood, mostly. There was just something that appealed to me about Steamboat. To be honest it was the fact it gave more of a small western town feel that just happened to have some excellent skiing on it's doorstep. I hope I'm right.
The kids get inside and outside playtime mixed in with beginning ski work. The kids center has been completely remodeled for this year. Some of the kids KVC people may upgrade my remarks as that is not my department and I am short on details for y...
We are a fan of the Lodge at Steamboat as well. Returning for our second year in December. Agree the statement regarding the dated decor, although I did notice some units that had been updated. The units are very accessible to parking and the outd...
I don't think there are indoor pools in Steamboat. At least, not that I know of near the ski area. And there are no theme hotels, a la the Smugglers hotels in the Northeast. The Sheraton Hotel & Condos has been the best bar none logistically speak...
Hi! My husband and I are avid skiers and we are trying to figure out the best way to intro our 3 year old to winter activities/skiing. We understand he is a bit young, but I was wondering about the "buckeroo" program. It sounds like a lot of playi...
