To show their good sense of humor about it all: As I was driving in to town last Friday, I heard an ad for the Tugboat on the radio, and they referred to themselves as "Tugboat Island."
There's a Base Area Businesses and Amenities Map on www.steamboatunbridled.com that shows what the plans are for Ski Time Square. I believe the goal of the project is to make the area more pedestrian-friendly, while still maintaining a village feel, and updating the outdated 70's vibe.
Atira wants to build a project that will overshadow everything else around that area and block views now enjoyed by guests at Ski Time Square, Kutuk, Torian Plum, Bronze Tree, and Storm Meadows. They are asking for a height variance of 43.5% over what is allowed by code that will creat canyons that will shadow the ground and enhance the noise levels in these areas. If you are interested in learning more about the project and how it will affect the base, Atira is presenting their case to the city Planning Commission tomorrow night and to the city council next month. If you are an owner that is getting ready to lose your view then you need to voice your opinion. My views will not be affected by this project but I don't want to see others in our buildings lose their view. I also don't want to see a precedent set for future projects that will create a base of skycrapers where each project tries to outshine the previous one.
This is the first I've heard about the plans for over-height buildings at Ski Time Square, and it sounds excessive. I'm not an owner so I guess I don't have much voice in such projects. I hope the locals like you will keep trying to keep the development at the base to reasonable proportions.
St Cloud and Highlands are two other projects that are seeking even larger variances for their future constuction. That is why it is important to let the Planning Commission and City Council know now that this is not what locals or visitors want for their community and vacation destination before a precedent is set.

Marlene, thanks for the link.
Regarding the Atira request for a variance. 43.5% seems a bit excessive. As a repeat visitor I would better appreciate a more open rather than surrounded by tall structures atmosphere around the square. Not only the people who have invested into the area, but visitors also should be able to have open site lines to the surrounding landscape.
YUCK! Hopefully that will not come to pass. The views from the 3rd floor condos in Ski Time square condos are wonderful and it would be heartbreaking to see them obscured. I was so afraid this was going to happen though. Glad the tugboat is safe and sound. What about the candy store and the shops...I suppose that they are all gone as well aren't they?
Everything across the street from the Torian Plum back to the Ski time Square Condos is gone, No Dos Amigos, No Pirate Pub, No General Store, No Butcher Shop, Nothing, Nada, except the Tugboat.
Even Check Point Charlie which was the first to go, has been replaced by a Traffic Circle.
OH. The general store is gone too!! I couldn't remember if it was past the Tugboat or not and hoped it was safe from the ax. That is sad to hear. We usually stock up there when we first come in before we hit the grocery store the next day. I'm really anxious about seeing the changes. We didn't make it up last year because my daughter was born Janurary 10th and I couldn't talk the rest of the group into going with a little one. We're not staying in Ski Time Square this year but I really loved the feel of it. We picked the snowflower because we needed a bit more space but I'll for sure be headed to the Tugboat at least once next week.
