What is the best true ski in/out accomadation at steamboat??
Have stayed at bear claw in past and thought that they were great--is there a better alternative or should our family of five stay there again??

Bear Claw is a great choice. Other options you could consider: At the base you could consider the Sheraton, Torian Plum, Christie Club, and probably a couple others near the Christie Club. And I guess One Steamboat Place will open sometime this season.

Further up the mountain is Storm Meadows Club (some buildings are better than others for ski in/ski out). Bronze Tree is supposed to be ski in/out, but methinks there is a good bit of polling to get in there. On the Bear Claw side of the mountain, Chateau Chamonix is nice, Ironwood is very nice, and the Dulaney is more ski in/walk out. There are some older complexes on that side of the mountain, but I am not sure about all of there status as some do really both ski in and ski out. Of course for a hotel the Ptarmigan Inn is ski in/out.

I am pretty sure that One Steamboat Place won't be in the rental pool I believe their rules preclude it.

Funny, but I know the group that was awarded the rental management contract earlier this fall.

I have clarified the rules and you are right the few units that are whole ownership will be allowed to rent and Moving Mountains is the agency.
I would be surprised if more than a couple of units are made available considering what the whole units sell for.
The remainder of the units that are part share ownerships are not for rent which is the lions share.

jg_atl has it pretty much covered.

Some of the Storm Meadows Townhomes have superb ski-in/ski-out access too. (Note that the Storm Meadows shuttle is scheduled and not on-demand as you would have been used to at Bear Claw, so getting to restaurants in the evenings is a little bit more work - but by no means a struggle!)

There is also Antlers, close to the Christie Club. Now that the Christie Lift isn't operational regularly there probably would be a tiny bit of poling involved getting from either Christie Club or Antlers to the Gondola or Christie Peak Express.

There's actually quite a bit of work involved getting from the properties on the non Bear Claw side to the Gondola. We've always stayed on that side and can tell you getting my 2 little-ish (now 7&9) boys to school was a lot of extra effort for them and us since it's so flat over there. Now we ski down each day from the Thunderhead lift drop off since we rent a house near there. But it's still a lot of work. If we are in a rush we elect to be dropped off at the transit center and walk rather than take the pole and scoot route.

Difficult one...

We have stayed at Bear Claw for the past 6 years, so we might be biased ;-)

To be honest we haven't found a better combination of "ski-in/ski-out convenience", homeliness (look, feel and service) and value than Bear Claw: it is very hard to beat. Since you are a returning guest, I assume that you also get the "returning guest early booking rates" which make Bear Claw EVEN more attractive (I think that you need to book soon, though, not sure when their cut off date for those offers are...).

We did stay at Torian Plum one year (before Ski Time Square was knocked down and before we stayed at Bear Claw), but we were paying more money for a smaller condo and the ski-in/ski-out was less convenient. The pool is also a pain to get to (sort of in the middle of two public paths - no direct access from the Torian Plum buildings). BUT it's advantage is that you can walk to shops/restuarants/bars etc (although less so without Ski Time Square at the moment). Torian Plum also has in-room laundry (which for me is the only downside at Bear Claw - not having that).

Antlers and Christie Club are VERY nice, but pricey and I feel that the attraction has gone down HUGELY since the regular Christie lifts are rarely ever used...

Chateau Chamonix would perhaps be another obvious choice: it looks like a nice place and location (although at a flatter part of the mountain than Bear Claw), but I have never stayed there or been in the units.

It is a difficult one: there is the temptation to "try something different", but then you don't want to end up riding past Bear Claw (on the Christie Peak Express) thinking "I wish we booked there again...". Bear Claw is hard to beat, but it depends on what you are looking for.

I heard from Moving Mountains in Steamboat that we are staying with this winter that a select number of Residences at One Steamboat Place are available through them for rental starting in January. They look amazing...and probably because of the last minute nature of the opening there will be some good deals for this winter.

That's what I heard too. I heard that Moving Mountains had been given the exclusive rental management contract for One Steamboat Place. I'm also staying with Moving Mountains this year but my dates were just too close to the ready-date for most units at One Steamboat. I didn't want to risk a delayed opening and then find myself scrambling for picked over accommodations. I'm up at Burgess Creek this year but will definitely be touring One Steamboat this winter.

I always fall flat on my face when I say things like this but.....I'll eat my hat if MM have the EXCLUSIVE rental management contract for OSP.....nothing against MM and a hell of a coup if they did but OSP is huge, MM aren't and it would be the only resort in Steamboat to implement such a policy.

Back OT, Bear Claw is definitely amongst the very best in terms of ski in/out location.....if you know you're getting a good remodelled unit and you don't mind shuttling to restaurants, bars etc, I would stay right where you are.

Oops, sorry. In looking back at my facebook exchanges on this subject it looks like I'm the one who added "exclusive," although it does seem to have been implied by the conversation. I do not know how many they have in their control but I know they have several.

Thanks for the correction.
