Help. I can't find the post, but remember somebody here suggested the airlines count a Ski Bag AND Boot Bag as one single piece of checked luggage. Is that right? American Airlines thinks it's two pieces. I could use some clarification and help making the argument to the airlines. Thanks.

As far as I know, this is still the rule in effect.

I THINK it is pretty much up to the individual airline to charge how it sees fit...

Fromt the AA website:
"One pair of skis/snowboard and one bag containing a pair of ski /board boots only " and "Two pieces - Ski/board boot bag and one pair of skis/snowboard are charged the applicable checked bag charge for the 1st or 2nd checked bag. When in excess, each item will be subject to the baggage charge for a single piece."

I am afraid that is REALLY unclear - I could read it either way (someone should be shot ;-) ). It means that the "two individual pieces will count as one piece (either your first or second checked bag)", but it is very badly worded (in my opinion).

If you are travelling with someone else, you could do what we do: I have a double ski tube for the skis, then a big holdall that the boot bags, helmets and other ski kit goes in. That is definitely still only 2 pieces (between two of us) to AA.

Whats the rules for BA Boo, my first flight with them this time out, I take skis, but the boots go in normal luggage.

Mike, assuming you are travelling World Traveller or World Traveller Plus (Economy or Premium Economy), then:
"World Traveller Plus and World Traveller - 2 bags
Maximum dimensions per bag (H+W+L): 158cm (62in)
Maximum weight per bag: 23kg (51lbs)*
*Charges apply to bags weighing more than 23kg (51lbs)."

In ADDITION to the above allowance, you can carry:
"One pair of skis, poles and boots or one snowboard and boots." (per person)

So you will have no trouble: you could have 3 suitcases,, a holdall with both sets of boots in AND one/two ski bag/s and you would be fine.

Just watch the weight, though, BA are starting to get VERY particular about charging people going over 23kg a bag. They charge £25 per bag over 23kg, but will not except any bags over 32kg.

We are always pretty close to the limit (just under 23kg) on our boot/helmet/ski gear holdall...

I'll say! The telephone agent was just as confused, even after checking with someone. The final determination became "it is up to the discretion of the ticket/baggage agent at the airport" Now why am I not real comfortable with that? :)

Either way, I think I'll be allright, but as you point out. Why go through the trouble to address the topic, and then address it in a muddy way.

Thanks again

I'm flying Delta from Seattle to Steamboat via Salt Lake. I had Steamboat Reservations make my plans; Steamboat got Delta to take my ski bag as my first bag at no charge. The Steamboat is giving me a $25 gift card for my other bag with my ski clothes. I carry on a backpack with my boots, helmet, goggles, shell pants and my mittens. I can always rent or demo skis but I would hate to do boots that way. This way, I'm able to ski right away if my luggage gets held up.

great tip !!! I forwarded this on to our agent as I too am flying Delta (actually Northwest) and hope I can get a similar deal. Since taking my wife and kids, it'd end up costing me approx $200 more for my trip to lug everything.

Ok.. I am here, yeahhhhh!
FYI.. the American counter agent confirmed, 1 ski bag + 1 boot bag counts as a single bag. I was charged the customary $15 1 bag fee for both my bags.
