I'm going to be in steamboat from the 17th of December to the 22nd. I am 21 and I am going to be with my older brother and his friend, there both 27. Were planning on staying at the Ptarmagin Inn, is that a good choice? Hows the location, is it really ski in/ski out. How close is it to bars and returaunts?
Having stayed in the Ptarmigan for a few ywars now I can honestly tell you, the wife and myself will be very sad to hear that it will actually be torn down. They threaten this every year but so far it has remained. I know it is ageing but doing so with grace. True ski in and out, equipment rental in the basement, friendly pub, restaurant and staff.
Off course it is occupying a prime location and the almighty dollar will eventually win out.
We were delayed by a day due to weather BUT Dan, Ben and the staff of the Ptarmigan Inn were as usual very understanding. "No problem at all, your room is waiting for you" said Dan... Typical of the staff of this older, much respected property.
When we finally arrived after a long bus trip from Denver we were greeted with a smile, a swift check in and down to the cellar to rent the wifes skis.
That evening we ate in the Snowbird restaurant and the food was wonderful with good service. Breakfast the next morning was equally as good, hot, fresh, quickly served and without attitude.
Along with the unbeatable ski in, ski out location, free computers and free internet this hotel sets a standard that many like the wife and I have come to respect and enjoy.
Older propery? certainly it is, but going strong and always ready to please the visitor in any way they can.
Hopefully they will be around for another season. The loss of a hotel, pub, restaurant and ski rental facility on that side of the slopes would be a great shame.
That is a great report and great news. We are staying at the Ptarmigan next week. Looking forward to it. What type of food does the restaurant serve? Also, can you rent skis even at night. We don't get in until 8pm or so Saturday evening.
We stayed at the Ptarmigan March 14-18. It was great. I would stay there again. The location can't be beat, a true ski-in and ski-out. The ski rental and storage on-site is awesome. The food in the Snowbird was great. We really enjoyed breakfast everyday. It is a good size hotel, not too large. I could park very close as well. The rooms are a little small and stuffy, but otherwise, I would highly recommend the PT.
i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.
Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.
Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.
I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
