Performance Ski Rental
I have been going to Steamboat for a long time now and usually I have had my own skis to use. Unfortunately I have outgrown my skis and need to rent because buying skis and boots for me is about $1600. The last time I rented skis was when I was a beginner and because of this I don't know what to get. I can do and have done almost everything on the mountain from the bumps to the chutes to the trees and everything in between. I don't know what kind of skis to rent though and I am stuck between the high performance and the demos. Is there any difference other than the price? Thanks.

Not sure where you are renting from to tell what the difference is, but for real good all mountain skis try the Fischer Watea 84's and the Nordica Top Fuels.
Both are great skis.

Check with the Guys in the Yurt at the top of the Gondola. I have had several friends who have used their service and been very happy. If you tell them what your ability, desires, etc are, they can set you up with a set of skis. Steamboat Ski and Bike Kare and One Stop Ski Shop, both downtown are two others I recommend.
Any good ski shop will help you decide what to rent and most will credit the rental fees toward purchase if you want to buy after the demo.

Justin - the ski rental business has come a long way since you probably have rented. In fact, due to the high costs of buying new equipment, as you mentioned, I also decided to do rentals this year. For only $160 I could rent decent skis (K2 Burning Love) for the entire season ( I rented from Ski Haus for myself and my 3 kids for the season). Not only is the equipment better, your choices are better and also the people working in the ski shops seem to be more informed. Don't be afraid to tell them (and anywhere will be able to help - whether it is the Yurt at the top, Steamboat Ski & Bike Kare, Ski Haus, Steamboat Ski & Sport, etc.) exactly what you mention here - your ability, experience, what you feel comfortable skiing, height, weight, etc. and they will be able to outfit you with a great ski. In other words - don't let this worry you. But I do like the idea of being able to try different skis (especially if you have been out of the loop so to speak for a few years) so maybe the demos at the Yurt would be the way to go. This way if you don't like them for one reason or another just bring them back and try something else. All without having to go to the bottom. Have fun!

i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.
Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
