If you are headed out to Steamboat this week then be prepared for that nasty winter time 'R' word - Rain. I live at the base of the mountain and it has been raining all day - i didn't go up today so i don't know if was rain or wet snow up top, but be prepared that the forecast is for warmer temps and moisture this week and weekend. When packing your bags:
1) Pack good rain gear.
2) Pack low expectations that way in the event it is snowing instead of raining you will feel "lucky."
3) Don't buy all your lift tickets up front. Even though you will pay a slight bit more paying day by day you will end up saving quite a bit by skipping those really wet days.
4) Pack good hiking clothes and do what us locals do when the winter weather gets like this and take a road trip to Moab, UT for some awesome hiking. If your family skips skiing for a day or two then take that money saved and rent a car and get a place to stay in Moab for the night. The weather forecast looks perfect for hiking this week in Moab.
I liked it. Good heavy snow that pushed back on the ski. Skiing was great on the groomed or when you got into shaded, cold areas. Hit knee deep pockets in Christmas tree.
Get a good jacket and get out there skiing's great!
The snow Tuesday morning was not bad at all in the trees. A little heavy, but way better than I expected after Monday. Today was also not to bad if you followed the sun around the mountain and hit everything during its window between too hard and too soft. Below Thunderhead was pretty slushy when I got down there around 2:30pm. It seemed cooler today. Hopefully, that is a trend.
