I've had the same jacket for 3 or 4 seasons and am contemplating searching for a new one this year.

The one I have has a removable liner which I like and it works pretty well in most cases. However about 3 years ago, we were at The Boat in the Spring and got alot of snow while there. It seemed that the jacket showed a number of places that there were dark (wet) spots showing and I tended to get cold that trip.

Now, with the last two years we have been there in Feb. and it's cold so I havn't had a problem but I still think it best if I can locate something a bit better without breaking the bank. I like the liner and I like a jacket that has plenty of pockets for camera, water gloves etc.
I know I'll get great info from folks here.

ATL doesn't have as big a selection or as many options as Steamboat, but I have been using a locally purchased Marker jacket for heavy duty cold days and I also have a Marker shell for spring skiing. I have been very happy with both. Lots of pockets inside and out, lots of velcro adjustments, powder skirt is nice for all those powder days, pit zippers for the warmer days. Both of mine are probably over 6 years old and have held up well.

where do you get your clothes and things in ATL? Peter Glenn or the other place on Roswell RD? My kids live up there and are looking for things for our trip. I understand the ski show is oct 25 at Cobb Galleria, we may drive up for that. sf

Patti, both Peter Glenn (I normally go to the Prado location) and Rocky Mountain Sports carry Marker, and both are good shops. Even if you combine both of them, you don't get as much selection as you do in a ski town. The ski show stuff is all of Peter Glenn's overstock from all over the country from past years. I went once and was underwhelmed and never went back again.

If you are looking for hard goods (skis and boots), when you go to Rocky Mountain, ask for Joel (he's the manager) or if you go to Peter Glenn at the Prado, ask for P.C. (great product knowledge). Of course it is great that these two stores are only 2 minutes apart.

I forgot about the Prado location. My son-inlaw needs ski pants or bibs, my son need snowboarding clothes, we have a while to get it all but may go to the ski show just for fun, haven't been in a few years. We don't need skis we usually rent we have our own but they are a hassle to travel with, my hubby needs new boot warmers (battery operated) so we will hit up the shops probably end of Oct. Too much to do and almost not enough time!!! sf

It is pretty easy to go to the equipment sale at the Galleria and if you don't find anything you like, you can head over to Roswell Rd and hit Rocky Mtn and Peter Glenn there. The Peter Glenn shop at the Prado will be pretty consumed with ski sales activities, so I don't know how much you will find inside the store.

Just went by the Sun and Ski store which is about all there is here in Austin. They still have all of the new stuff boxed in the back and say it won't be out till mid Oct !!!

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)

I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
