Hi - I see variations of this question have been asked before, but thought I'd ask my particular version!
We'll be in steamboat early december for 7 nights, with two girls, 10 and 12. They have skiied a bit before - can ride tbars and chairs here in NZ. But we will find the powder very different (and the altitude).
My plan was to put them in lessons each day (and take a few ourselves) but it looks like your lessons are all day? We were hoping to spend more time with them skiiing than just an hour at the end. We spent few days on Mt Hood in Jan and we cruised around on blue trails all afternoon after morning lessons, and that felt ideal. Is that possible in steamboat, or have I been reading the info wrong?
You put that perfectly! It's not so much a half day so we can teach them anything, it's time to noodle around the mountain together, that's all! Good to know the teaching programmes are great though.
No group 1/2 day morning lessons are offered for adults or kids. As a family you can take a morning private clinic; expensive for one person but not so much more instead of dailies for 4 people. Adults can take 1/2 day group classes but in the afternoon only; no kids' afternoons are available anymore. You can always pay for full days and cut out at an appointed time. Class kids eat at Thunderhead every day.
I agree that family time is important but keep in mind that lessons for kids end at 2:45 pm (3 at the latest). That still gives you an hour to mess around on the front slopes since the gondola and Christie Express stay open until 4.
