How does the mountain hold up . . .
We are arriving March 22 for a week, and long range forecasts show alot of the highs over the next week into the 50's and maybe even 60.
What can we expect to find for snow conditions?
Does this mean we should plan morning skiing only?
How much difference is there in temp and snow from peak to base?

spring skiing, summer conditions . . . especially mid to lower mtn. It's what you get with late March visits. Buy sun block, lip balm before you come to save $$.

Top should be fine, Bottom gets slushy in the afternoon.
You can ski all day at the top and in the morning at the bottom. I always take the Gondola down if I ski past two o'clock or later.
Sometimes the top is warmer (inversion) but usually it is about 10 or more degrees colder.
We can get big dumps at anytime so who knows the specifics. Last year, the last week had over a foot of new snow.

I will be here from the 19th to 23rd. Ihave similar concerns about conditions. When u say spring conditions is it safe to assume we won't have powder this weekend? I'm coming from the east coast and was hoping for a good CO experience. Please calm my nerves and tell me what to expect

Steamboats exposure is favorable so you will have snow . . . to ski on. Whether it snows for you to experience deep powder is uncertain, and looking at the longer range forecast not likely. Next week base temps up in the high 50s. Ouch. http://www.snowforecast.com/Steamboat is a good place for info. As I said above buy sunblock and lip balm before you come to save $$ and use it often. Maybe throw in the shorts too.

above is a link for the actual top of the mt. forecast. As many noted temps vary GREATLY from bottom to top. When we were there a few weeks ago, it was 50s at base and the top was high 20s with everything still frozen and wonderful.
That was a great tip to ski the top and ride the gondy down in mid afternoon. The one day I did decide to ski to the bottom, I was already tired, adn having to navigate thru mashed potatoes for the last mile or so to the base was extremely tiring , thus warranting significantly more beer to recouperate from the strenuous activities.

i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.
Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)
I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
