I know, I know, take lessons. ... and I likely will, if we can swing it, but from a technical standpoint, what primarily should you be doing different with your body, skis, poles, etc. for hitting a groomed run vs. 1-2 feet of powder?

I assume it's something like lean back more, but would like to hear some of you more seasoned skiers opinions.......Oh, and BTW, .......Go Steelers!

Thanks, eases my mind a little. thanks for the feedback... and what exactly are 'push piles'? (still learning the lingo)

After groomed runs have been skied on for awhile then you start getting snow piles where the turns are being made more consistently As skiers ski their line then they push more snow onto the piles. If you have not had much snow recently then the piles don't amount to much. If there have been just 2-3" of new snow over night then the piles develop rather quickly. The more snow we have over night the bigger and faster the "push" piles develop. If left ungroomed then they develop into moguls or bumps. That is why some runs are left ungroomed, so that they will turn into mogul runs. Moguls are just grown-up push piles.
My understanding is that Apaches are an entire line of skis from K2. Which model are they, and what year? You can find the measurements on most skis at the bottom...there should be three - tip, waist, and tail.

It really depends on how long they are compared to your body height and weight, in the end. Hope they work for you!

it really is all about the width under your foot, not at the tips and tails.

i´m not opposed to people not skiing on wider skis, but in soft and deep snow a wider waist does make things easier, even with less than bottomless snow. if you´re not comfortable with 100+ waist, try bumping up to 85-95 mm

wait, scratch that, use narrower skis.... wide skis stink and are too hard to ski in variable conditions.... more people skiing well in powder really doesn´t benefit me. :)

Go faster.

Maintain a balanced center stance, use less edging and more steering the skis under a stable upper body, keep your hands ahead of you in an athletic ready position leading you down the fall line. Your stance in powder will be narrower providing a better platform for a more manageable base of support.
Bottom line, do not twist the upper body to turn, do steer the skis patiently under a stable upper body and stay tall not crouched.

Good luck,

u the man! thanks Barry!!! When we do get some group lessons when we come (for level 4-5 for wife and me, respectively), do you give lessons on both powpow and groomers?

I do, let me know when your coming for lessons and I will look for you if I am at line-up that day.

Thanks

I need help Barry! Preface I'm a 5 level and shes just a hair behind. After telling my wife that I'd like to sign us up for lessons (3 half day ones), she was all P.O.'d at me, saying its a vacation and just wanted to relax. She would rather just explore around the mountain with me and not 'work'. When I told her I still wanted to take the lessons even if she didnt, then I almost got a frying pan thrown at my head!! (slight exaggeration) becuase I would be 'abandoning her' for those 3 half days.

So, Barry, or other teachers, give me some sound ammunition or advice on how I can talk her into these lessons.

Kup,
Does she bring that frying pan with her when she skis? OUCH LOL.
It sounds like you two have different motivations for skiing so maybe your wife is content with things as they are for her. Why not compromise and take a lesson alone one day and then brag about your great time during apre ski? Maybe she'll want to join in then, especially if she sees a difference in your skiing maybe she'll feel left behind. A little subtle competition might work.
You can also assure her that the instructor will teach or coach to her and your motivations whether it be seeing more of the mountain and skiing better or one a little more than the other.
Are you going for private lessons or group?

Cant really swing private lessons, but I wanted to do the 3 half day package for the two of us. Since we're there for 6 days of skiing, If I can talk her into it, I think days 2, 3, and 4 would be best to let us get our ski legs in on day 1 first.

Tell her it is a "couples" private ski lesson. It will be worth it. Both of you will improve so much with your skiing that it will make the rest of the vacation so much more enjoyable. Throw in a massage or day at the spa and you are good to go.

IMO way too much work and too many potential issues. The simple but expensive solution is to bring along a nanny. Otherwise wait 2 years.
