I am trying to get a few members of my family together for a reunion. They are all different skiing abilities. Can anyone recommend some lodging which would be a special place for us to stay in - I love good food but want a holiday! If all goes well, there could be up to 9 adults and maybe 5 kids!
If you look at the fact that with the full-service package you don't have to rent vehicles (it would have been three in our case), it includes all of your food and non-alcoholic drinks so you don't have to set the house up and then give the housekeepers the left overs at the end of the week, and the fact that they do everything for you (cook / clean up / housekeeping / driving etc) which means you are on vacation all day when you are here, which is a blessing when you add an activity like skiing to the mix, then there is no question in our minds that this is the way to go. My only complaint - we miss this service now that we don't have it in another resort!!
For our evening meals they fed the kids a kid-friendly menu at 5:30pm and then the parents could sit down to a gourmet three-course dinner while kids watch a movie in the rec room or played video games. Now that I think about it I remember how good the food was and how much fun my wife had not having to cook.
For breakfast we all ate together and it was a daily smorgasbord of fresh baked pastries, homemade granola, fresh fruit, yogurts, cereals, and daily dishes like stuffed french toast, waffles, pancakes and they did eggs on request daily. The real treat was the lattes and espressos that would otherwise have had us opening an account at Starbucks for the week!
Lunch is also included with with package and initially there was concern that we would not need this. However after the first day when we came back for fresh home-made soup and break and a platter of exotic cold-cuts - a real hearty "country lunch" as I would call it we were not tempted to eat on the mountain except for one day when we dined in style at Ragnars. For some this was a chance to duck out and relax before the kids came back from ski-school. The rest of us were back on the mountain in an hour without having eaten mountain priced hot-dogs, burgers and fries. Just a little more understated value here.
Bill, did you rent the extra SUV for your group? We will be 9 total so the one Suburban won't take us all around town. What about the ski boots. I do not like to take them off midday. Were you allowed to go upstairs with them? I've been told no on that.
We managed just fine with the one Moving Mountains vehicle. It wasn't worth the expense for us to have them provide another. For the one night that we all wanted to go out together the staff were able to pull in another vehicle from their fleet and we were treated to full chauffeur service to downtown and back.
Ski boots - I am with you on that one that it's tough to take them off - but the homes are so nice that you would never dream of clomping around in ski boots upstairs. I would rather eat their home made lunch vs. keeping my ski boots on just to dine on the mountain.
I agree about the extra vehicle. We probably won't need the full transport most times either. I think we might try lunch once or twice in the house but we mostly like Hazies for lunch. After many years on our own it has become a regular tradition we look forward to. Also, I check in with my children then since the kids' cafeteria is just next door.
I'm staying in the Black Bear Chalet this year. It is 1/2 of a duplex in the Burgess Creek area just down the road from the other house mentioned. You can add the 2 halves together and get an 8 bedroom house that sleeps 122 people! Ok, I'm exaggerating, but it's a lot. We will have 6 adults 3 kids on our side alone without aeorbeds, sleep sofas, etc.

Well, I've made up my mind. Spoke to the owner of moving mountains today - and they certainly tick all the boxes. I think moving mountains chalet will suit us totally - just got to get the family to agree on a date and we have our holiday sorted. Thanks guys for the advice. I will post on here afterwards to let you know how it all went! Ginny
I'm going out on Jan. 15 for my trip with Moving Mountains. I'll be sure to give you my impressions. After so many trips on our own we are psyched to finally get the full service deal. I enjoy restaurants a lot, but not so much on a family ski trip. The last few years it has been almost a burden to go out. It's my vacation too so I've never cooked much before.
The men in my group have even said they will commandeer the kitchen since they have sous chefs to help and a cleaning crew now. I think that's one of the real perks with MMountains-- the communal kitchen event. It makes the camaraderie of the ski day extend into the evening as well without making anyone in the group be burdened with extra work.
Thought I'd post an update after we return. Promontory is a hike to the hill but we found we could carry our skis slightly up hill and get to the access run down to the gondola/Christy Peak Express. After a bit of searching, we also found a way to s…
