Hi! We're coming over from England for a week this Christmas (counting the hours already) with our two boys, 9 + 11.
For Christmas Day we would like to go out to a restaurant (not pizza or chinese - something more traditional with turkey or pork a great steakhouse even...) - please can anyone suggest somewhere really great with a good atmosphere and good food?? Would we need to book up ahead of time or would we be fine to have a look around when we arrive earlier in the week?
Many thanks!!
Helen
Hi Helen, I would recommend booking ahead of time. I tried to do this a couple of years ago and was at least a week out from Christmas and they kind of laughed at me on the phone. I learned my lesson - if you want to get a table at a good time, and even request better seating I would call in advance meaning at least a month or two if they are taking them. Some of my favorites for Christmas have been The Pine Grove Ore House (steak and seafood) and the Old West Steakhouse (also steak and fish). check out the Steamboat Springs Dining Guide (google it) to get numbers, etc. If you book at Ore House ask to be seated near a fireplace - it is much cozier that way!
Thanks Marlene!
I've had a quick look at their websites...I think I'll need to contact them to get a feel for what they do at Christmas....were they all decorated and have a proper Christmassy feel or change their menu at all? It's the first time that we'll be away from home for Christmas Day and I don't want it just to feel like any other 'normal' meal for the kids! Food looks good though and thanks re fireplace tip. The Ore House seems to have the edge but only because I can't see any photos of the other one!
Any other thoughts most welcome!
We've not been to Steamboat for Christmas ,, yet but the Ore House is one place that we always eat at one night. there are some fancier but a bit more pricey .
Thank you - can I ask where you'd suggest in the 'pricier' range - that it's still okay to take 2 (well behaved!) children to, (but not too 'stiff' an atmosphere) just so I can look at other options....thinking of the other 'non Christmas nights' is it still usual to book before we arrive in Steamboat or would we be okay then to just eat wherever the mood takes us on the day??
- seems weird talking about Christmas yet...but I know if i let it slip I'll miss the boat!
Thanks so much -Helen
For me, Bistro CV beats Diva to the best restaurant award. Diva's great but Bistro's better. Bistro is also less 'stuffy' than Diva which clearly states on the menu 'well behaved children only'.
With that said I'm not sure what Bistro does in terms of Christmas day offerings so should probably check that out too!
Christmas in Steamboat is always a blast - I'm sure you're going to have one to remember :)
Thank you!! All very helpful comments - however..to throw a spanner back in the works now I'm perhaps steering back to something a tiny bit less formal than either Bistro CV or Diva - am not sure that it would be great value for my 9 + 11 yr olds or perhaps the most fun experience....although they each look great for grown ups (!!) anything else out there that you can suggest as really lovely and with great food but perhaps a touch less formal?? thanks so much!
I'd also say the Ore House is a real Steamboat experience and consistently good.
Don't necessarily be put off Diva/CV though. Nowhere in Steamboat is that formal (that's the beauty of it!).....for example, you're more than welcome at either place in jeans and casual clothes. With that said, CV definitely has a less formal atmosphere than Diva though.
i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.
Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December.
Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.
I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast?
Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?
I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)
I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
