Hello all, after just reading the forum posts last year, I've decided to jump in to the discussions. My family and I are going to arrive at our Terraces condo on Christmas Day and wonder what about the best solution for dinner. We will be arriving about 2pm and don't mind the shopping but we are also interested in alternatives. Any advise from the locals?
BTW - I LOVE living in the best 2 places in the states - Key West and Steamboat!
First, I'm from Marathon -- just fifty miles north (east, I guess) of you. :) But I've lived here for the past four years, I guess, but being a minor I'm still legally a resident of Florida... and will head back there next year for college.
The Ore House would probably be my top pick if you like traditional American food (and delicious steak). I'd advise making your reservation now, though, if you want to eat there on Christmas. There are plenty of mexican and chinese restaurants in town that would make a great christmas dinner. Do you have any specific target for a type of food? Do you want a traditional Christmas dinner, or just a nice meal?
I'm not a local but I worked as a ski Instructor in Steamboat for the last two years and spent 40 ski days there last year. But my choice would be to try the Ore House at the Pine Grove. Great restaurant right off Lincoln Avenue in the same shopping center as Ski Haus, they have good steaks and seafood and I love their salad bar.
But there are tons of great restaurants throughout the city in both downtown and by the mountain. Casino’s also has great Italian food and Pizzas.
I would think that you will want to go out for dinner: after a long day travelling and also getting prepared for the next day skiing, you deserve some time to relax, wind-down and enjoy Christmas...
How many in your party, what sort of ages, what sort of food do you like?
A lot depends on what type of food/atmosphere you want to experience. From Rex's American Grill at the Holiday Inn to The Cabin at The Grand to delivery Pizza, you can make your choice.
The Cabin at The Grand usually puts on a pretty good Christmas Dinner IIRC.
Another great spot is the Yacht Club downtown on Yampa. I am pretty sure that they do set menus, with some delicious choices. We go there for Valentine's Day now and then. Yum. :)
We are looking for a more "traditional" Christmas dinner. Has anyone gone to Sheraton Grand for Christmas Day? We also called City Market and found out that they have an almost complete dinner to go pretty reasonably priced, has anyone tried this alternative? DId anyone try Drunken Onion for their Thanksgiving meal?
Actually, the Sheraton Grand does not exist. There is the Sheraton Steamboat (slope side and being rehabbed into a combo hotel and time share) and The Steamboat Grand (Condo Hotel) across the street from the Sheraton.
The Steamboat Grand has an upscale restaurant called The Cabin which puts on a traditional Christmas Dinner every year and will this year I assume. I believe the Sheraton does as well. Of the two, I would suggest the Grand as First choice.
Cooking for Christmas dinner is a great idea, we get a honey baked ham for Christmas dinner after a long day of skiing. But one little word of warning is City Market usually runs pretty low on stock during this week due to the inflow of people to Steamboat for the holidays.
Make sure to get a city market discount card they are free and save you a lot at the store. Also if they are out of what you need Safeway off Lincoln will probably have it but at a higher price.

I highly recommend the Drunken Onion. We got the entire meal from them on Thanksgiving and plan to repeat again on Christmas. The menu was quite traditional and really good. Go to their website/email and send any questions you have. "Ben" was very prompt and helpful in his replies.
A bit of a warning though, I am not sure if I am the only one, but I find cooking much more "challenging" in Steamboat... I THINK that the altitude has a lot to do with it (things boil at a lower temperature), but it may also be that US cookers seem to work a bit differently than most UK ones...
I am normally a pretty good cook (honest!), but I struggle with things in Steamboat (even things that I very regularly cook at home, just don't seem to work as well in Steamboat). We do stay in a condo and I do cook some dinners in, but now I stick to fairly basic things (like pasta with sauce, soup, reheating things etc). If I tried anything like roasting something (turkey/ham), then it would probably be a disaster... :-(
So my advice would to not be too ambitious... although a lot of things are pre-prepared and require reheating only...
Yeah right George, It was hard, hard, hard and the powder or snow that was on top was a ski/board stopping wrist breaking crappolla. Stay home is what I would say. I have a tweeked shoulder to prove it. This comming from a lifty whom can ski just fi…
Well, I don't meet one of your criteria for skiing together, but this group is often used to organize meetings among forum members who are in town at the same time, and would otherwise only know each other from postings. These are often apres-ski me…
I'm not sure how to describe this morning's conditions for you. 'Changeable' is probably the best term.
On the one hand it is gorgesouly sunny, there is no wind, it's uncrowded, there are some great stretches of groom, and even some spots where th…

I am coming Easter week with my speed demon sons and husband. I am looking for other women to ski with who don't have to be the first down the mountain. I am a solid blue skier and can do some blacks depending on the conditions. Anyone else going …

Thought I'd post an update after we return. Promontory is a hike to the hill but we found we could carry our skis slightly up hill and get to the access run down to the gondola/Christy Peak Express. After a bit of searching, we also found a way to s…
