Steamboat

Your vacation planning community

Hi all,

Last year was my first trip to the boat and boy did I get hooked! Our trip last year was in Feb and the weather was beautiful.
In order to get my college age daughter out there, I must try to figure 2 trips out this time ( Oh me, Oh my) One in Dec and the other in Feb.
I was wondering what the weather/ Ski Conditions I can expect in December about the third week probably. I know some on this forum would have at least a guess from their experience.

Thanks to all who post here, your information has been wonderful.

Hi Bobby,
My husband and I have lived in Steamboat for a little morre than 8 years now, and we are up on the mountain nearly every day of the season. Every winter since we've been here, the snow has been amazing! There has been quite a bit of powder and it hasn't been too cold. It's hit or miss with the sunshine and blue-bird days around then. But the snow has been great!

I have been up several times for the 2nd weekend in December (a group goes to the Dotsero jazz concert that has always been that Saturday). Many times Sunshine area and Morningside are not yet open, but much of the rest of the mountain is. A few good years, even Sunshine was open. And no crowds that early. Great snow.

You should be OK from early Dec if we have a normal year or anything like the last few.

We usually fly into SB whatever day the kids get out of school for Christmas. The snow has always been fine. We arrive the 19th this year! Can't wait. There may be a very few lifts not yet open but that doesn't last long. Looks good so far for the season.

Hi Bobby,

My family and I have been making the Steamboat trip in December the last 5 years. The Ski Conditions and weather have always been fantastic each year. We also make this trip with a college age son during his Christmas break. We used to have the same concerns about the time of the season and even the crowds during the Holidays but, those concerns flew out the window after our first trip. As always the people are great, the weather is perfect and the snow is...well, it is Steamboat, is there any better? Hope you have a good trip. My wife just finished finalizing our trip this year. Steamboat here we come!!!!

Mitch

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)

I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
