Camera lost! Then found!
We got to Steamboat yesterday and had our first day of skiing today. We are staying at Ski Inn condos that are right under the gondola. My daughter went in for lunch, and I stayed out for one more trip up the gondola before going in. When I was coming back down the access trail, I called to tell her to go out on the balcony to take my picture as I skiied up to the condo. Well I didn't see her on the balcony, and I just figured that she did not get out there in time, no big deal. When I got into the condo, she had tears, she realized that she lost her digital camera somewhere on the mountain! We had skiied Vagabond and Heavenly Daze. After lunch she had a lesson, so I tried to tell her to keep her spirits up and maybe someone will find it and turn it in. After dropping her off at her lesson, I rode the gondola up and asked up at top if someone found a Canon Digital camera. They said no, but they would keep an eye out for it. They also suggested that I file a claim at lost and found down by the Gondola Base. At 3pm when I met my daughter, I thought I would go file the claim. She was waiting for me and her instructor had made the same suggestion and she already filed a claim. Amanda was tired after her lesson so a trip up Christy and she went into the condo and I stayed out for a few more runs. Then she gets a call from lost and found...
Some wonderful person found the camera somewhere on this big mountain and turned it in!
I went down to the gondola area to pick it up. Fortunately Amanda took a picture of me so we were able to confirm it was hers!!!

I love happy endings !!! I am glad (but not too surprised) that things worked out - another testament to the spirit and people (locals and visitors alike) of Steamboat. Being one that has lost one camera and broke another [way back in the old days before they had things like lenses and shutters ;) ], I know the monetary and personal loss associated with such incidents. Hope you and your daughter had a great time in SB.

reminds me of the time I found a cell phone and wallet on the snow outside Thunderhead. I went to lost and found down at the base at the end of the day and the owner was in the process of filing a report. He was very happy to see me as I walked up and said "Does this look like what you are reporting?"
I also have been the beneficiary of another kind soul who turned in a pair of my sunglasses I dropped somewhere, so it goes both ways. ;-)

I also found a cell phone (in the middle of the piste at the bottom of the Blizzard run) a year or two back. It was lying on the surface, I had stopped for a breather and I saw it shine in the sun. I picked it up and met a Ski Patroller at the top of Ego and handed it to him to give it to lost and found.
In contrast with a cruise we were on a few years ago. We left a digital camera down on the floor near our seats in the theatre. Didn't realise that we didn't have it within 3 minutes of leaving. Tried to get back in, but the doors to the theatre were locked. Reported it, but it was never found. Where we were sitting only one of about 12 other passengers would have seen it and walked past it or the cleaning crew could have taken it... :-(
This is one of the reasons why Steamboat is so good: there are lots of "my kind of people" around (both locals and visitors) :-)
Glad that your daughter got it back: no heartache for her AND it restores you faith in human nature too :-)

Since I live in South Florida I can relate to Boo's observations. I think cleaning crews seem to think that whatever they find is their "tip" for being in that particular business.

Similar experience a couple years ago. Lost my phone doing first tracks down Buddy's when I took a spill in two feet of fresh powder. On the ride up Storm Peak Lift I realized it was gone, and given the depth of the snow, I wrote it off as gone for good. We got back to our condo that afternoon and there was a call there from our daughter. It seems a local had found the phone and called our daughter (who happens to be the first entry in the phone book) and gave her info on how to contact them. I gave the nice lady a call and she dropped it off to the condo. I was amazed! And I still have the phone and it works great.
