Steamboat

Your vacation planning community

If you are lucky enough to be able to enjoy a reasonably long ski vacation in Steamboat, then buy your Super Value Passes EARLY.

We have been lucky enough to come to Steamboat for a couple of weeks for the past few years and have always bought Super Value Passes (15 day passes) before the mid-August deadline for the cheapest prices.

We couldn't book until late this year and so I have just purchased 20 day SVPs (the cheapest way to ski for 15 days) for us.... $917 each - eeek! Last year our 15 day SVPs (bought early) were $659 per person.

So the lesson is, if you are skiing quite a few days, buy those Super Value Passes VERY early ;-)

Think that I need to go and lie down :-D

I bought a 10-day SVP by the August deadline and saved a lot. I thank Kim (mojomom) for a post she made on a Pilot spin-off forum for reminding me to buy them in the summertime. If not for her I would have missed the deadline. This forum was dearly missed this past summer.

As for SVPs even purchased early, sadly they are not a savings if one has a child under 12 with them. The Kids Ski Free deal ends up being cheaper. One free child for one full-fare adult on the same itinerary purchased in advance is the only catch.

Hey Boo! So nice to hear from you again...I've missed you! And this forum!

We are going to be out at Steamboat for Christmas as well as NASTAR Championships and Spring Break this year. I did all kinds of mathmatical figuring to try to decide what was the best option for our family. I finally decided on season passes for myself because our youngest is still 12 and can do the kids ski free when you buy the adult season pass. Our oldest is a teen so he got the season pass and my husband, who skis less than the rest of us, I think we bought him one of those SVP. Of course, we booked it all before the August deadline but it still was a pretty penny!

I did talk to some new friends that decided against Steamboat and will go to Winter Park this year because of the increase in daily ticket prices. But hopefully, they'll see the error of their ways and come back next season! LOL!

Definitely it pays to be early and organised - it is amazing how much you save... :-)

I ahve always posted, on the old forum, to remind people of the dealine: the forum was definitely hugely missed during it's long absence this past Spring, Sumnmer and Fall. So glad to have it back! :-)

Ski Mom 2, we went to Winter Park a few years ago (to be fair, I am pretty sure it was 2003 - so it MAY have changed a bit since then...): we did 3/4 days there, then drove to Steamboat for the final 10 days of our trip. I wasn't impressed... Found the skiing pretty "samey" and the place didn't feel like a "resort", plus there were very few half reasonable restaurants there at the time. The sort of place that maybe you want to go for a day, maybe two at the most, but not for a ski "vacation". There was NO comparison with Steamboat... I think that your new friends will go running back to Steamboat VERY quickly... ;-)

I hope you all dont mind, but I am trying to plan a trip for three families (13 total people) including two teens and two children under 12. Obviously I'm trying to save as much as possible. Can you tell me more about the SVP's and when I should buy?

Thanks

The resort offers 10 & 15-day passes for adults (maybe 20) at a significant price reduction but the 10-day must be purchased before August 1 or so. There's no kid or teen SVP rate. The catch with SVPs as I mentioned before is that you can't use any other deal in conjunction so they don't represent value if you factor in the lost deal for kids under 12 which gives you one free kid for every full fare adult on the same itinerary.

My group will be on the snow for 9 days. The 10-day SVP for one person was only slightly cheaper than buying a 7 of 9 day ticket. So you could save something if you will be there for more than 8 days if you have your dates locked in by the summer and then remember to buy the SVPs before the August deadline. There are no specific reminders from the resort. Hopefully this site will still be running next summer to give you a nudge.

I can't remember if you have the whole year to use the days or not. It never concerned me since I make only 1 trip per season anyhow.

What a wonderful time in Steamboat: the conditions last week may not have been up to Steamboat standards, but they were awesome to me:   I haven't skied in at least 5 years, 7 years since I was last at the boat: Day 1...nice groom runs to get my leg…

Matt does rock (and Dave does too). My 4 year old was doing bumps, blue blacks, and glades after these 2 great instructors ran him and a couple of other rowdy boys all over the mountain. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
