I bought Snow Lodge, but don't really benefit from it. It was $1 or $2 when it first came out. The content in there is not so accurate, but also not terrible. If you were on a multi-week ski safari in an unfamiliar part of the country where you didn't have your destinations predetermined it could be useful as a high-level directory type thing, but the combo of a laptop plus wifi everywhere does much more, more accurately than Ski Lodge.
What I'm hoping someone will build is a iPhone app that works off of a downloadable locally stored topo/trail map. A few features like breadcrumb trail exportable in some usable GIS format would be fun. The iPhone can show me my location on a Google earth photo right now as long as I'm w/in bounds at the resort, but the trails are not delineated, and if you leave the resort there's no EDGE coverage, and therefore no map layer. All you get is actual GPS location floating in a field of white north of the resort in the Zirkels for instance.
A company contacted me earlier this season asking for tix and suggesting they were building something like the above, but they didn't respond to my "come to Steamboat" invite. I think we'll see a host of these type apps in the coming year. The platform is perfect and the network coverage is sufficient.
I saw an article about an app for GPS enabled phones. I have a Samsung Omnia (i900 I think). Its called SatSki, gives GPS positioning against Piste maps. Enables you to save pictures against location, and a nice feature, if you or somebody you are with/near gets into trouble it will transmit your position to the emergency services. Currently it covers Europe and a some of the States, but not Steamboat. Oh yes downside is my phone uses Windows mobile, so not sure if it's a windows only app.
Snow Reports is an app that is run through onthesnow.com and gives all the snow details for your selected resorts. You choose the resorts that you want to know about/have been to and its a great way to see the snow they are getting and what your upcoming conditions are going to be.
