Your vacation planning community

Hi all! So I'm looking at booking my first trip to Steamboat in mid January 2010, and was wondering what will be the impact of the Base Area Redevelopment ("Steamboat Unbridled") over the coming season? I had a hunt around the net and it's unclear (from the information I found) what the current status is – which plans were approved, which have been started, which completed, which are behind schedule, etc. And given the change in economic conditions, maybe some have been postponed or cancelled? I know that Fortress and Intrawest had some issues, so maybe it's all off? If so, what about the work that’s been done so far – has it been left in a reasonably attractive state, or is the base one big building site? I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering about this, so it'd be great if someone could give us non-locals the low-down. If the impact will be minimal, or there's no work scheduled at all, and everything looks great, you should get that information out there! Because right now all I can find is articles saying there's alot of construction & disruption and it’s probably best to give Steamboat a miss until it’s complete. I'd love to come to Steamboat this year because the snow, the people, and the lack of crowds sound great... but not if the construction's going to spoil it all. So can anyone fill me in? What work (if any) is scheduled for the coming season? What does the base area currently look like? Will there be heavy trucks making roads muddy and unsightly, cranes spoiling the view, hard-hats everywhere, heavy construction noise (or deserted & ugly building sites), half-demolished buildings, scaffolding, etc. And which properties are affected (by noise, spoilt view, etc) and how? Many thanks!

You should be fine by mid January. One Steamboat Place will be finished and Edgemont too I believe. I don't think there will be any cranes or construction zones during that time. They are working on the infrastructure for the rerouting of Burgess Creek, but that will be finished before the snow flies. If anything Steamboats base area will be much improved upon from last season.

Here's a link to the SPT article regarding the capital improvements on the hill this year:

IMHO there may be less construction this year than in the past several years. No worries, book your trip, mate!

Has the building on the other side of the Torian Plum Creekside been started yet? I mean the one that will replace the Thunderhead Lodge. I think it was a parking lot last year? What about the stuff around the Tugboat and the rerouting of the street up there? Will the school office mean a trek upstairs for those of us that ski down to the base?

I'll go now to read the Pilot story so my apologies if all of this is explained therein.

Brian,

2010 will be our 5th year at Steamboat and we have already booked all our condos and airfare. You will not have problems and will love it.
There was construction around last year but it made no impact on the base or skiing. You could go to http://steamboat.com/ and look at the mountain cams to see what it looks like now.
The rock wall and bungy jump will be gone before ski time.

Trudy, none of the work has started on the Thunderhead replacement (Ritz). When they went to the city council to get their height variance, they also got a variance to allow them to wait up to 5 years to begin construction. Tugboat Island still stands all by itself.

Hi all! Thanks for the replies. The news update on the Steamboat website (released the same day I posted my question... maybe as a result of my question... woohoo!... or maybe concidence...) helped clarify some stuff too. Seems like some of the new buildings will be completed just after I leave, but I guess they'll be working on the insides mostly, so at least I know that I won't be wading through a muddy building site. (Glad you told me what that rock wall was, Brian, 'cos I was wondering!) So I'm pretty much convinced that Steamboat should be top of my list (love those Youtube vids of people in the trees!)... I just have to convince my mates...

I was hoping they would not get the height variance passed. We like to stay in the Ski Time square condos and they have an amazing slope view but it will be gone if the place builds up taller than the Torian on the old Thunderhead site. So sad. Oh well, we'll be staying there this year to make sure we can enjoy it while we can! Can't wait to get my skis on!
