We will be arriving on dec 31 for five nights - first visit to steamboat. Staying in storm meadows club condos. 2 girls in the family of four, age 9 and 11. Outside of skiing and a walk around town, we plan to do the bbq dinner at the top of the gondola and are considering snowmobile tour for half day or 2 hours. Would apprecaite any feedback on snowmobile companies and tours. Any other must dos?
We do not plan on renting a car. Is it a reasonable walk from storm meadows to the base area for the fireworks/parade on new years eve?
It's a 'healthy' walk to the base - very do-able. Just take it slow and easy and wear the appropriate footware. The family will enjoy the show.
For other things to do, one can take a dip in the hot sprigs at the Old Towne Hot Springs located downtown (about 3rd and Lincoln). A lot of fun after dark and they have water slides which the kids will enjoy. Another possibility is to schedule a later afternoon visit to Strawberry Park Hot Springs - located outside of town. Be sure to arrange travel using one of the 'tour' companies as they have the experienced drivers to get there and back. There is also ice skating and bowling downtown. There is tubing at Howelsen Hill located downtown and at a ranch outside of town.
Snowmobiling, we did a two hour tour with http://www.steamboatsnowmobile.com/ and really enjoyed it. Note that it is colder for passengers than drivers (the drivers have heated handle bars and footwells). The temoerature also drops quite a lot after dark: so it is warmer to do a daylight session. Two hours will be enough for kids.
Depending on what sort of food you like to eat, the Steamboat Smokehouse (Downtown) might be fun for kids (http://www.steamboatsmokehouse.com/). There is also a "Johnny Be Good" diner in town too.
The tubing place west of town is called Saddleback Ranch, and I am sure they have a shuttle service. They also offer dinner sleigh rides, as does Elk River Guest Ranch. The ERGR is about a 45 minute drive north of town, but they also have shuttles that do pick-ups/drop-offs. They bring you out to a big teepee where you sit on big cushy pillows and eat really good food. The atmosphere is great! There is an indoor ice arena in town too. That might be fun.
YES! They have several "departure times" starting I think around 1830 for the Gondola so as to minimize lines at the Buffet. You can come back down any time you wish. They only have the BBQ on weekends, Fri, Sat and Mon.
Immediately post skiing head to Slopeside for some beverages (they make a mean Shirley Temple per my 9 and 11 year olds) and enjoy the sunshine if there is any and the crowd/band. My kids love this as there are a lot of kids out usually and dogs playing frisbee. Also, great food. After that you can walk back to in front of the gondola/base area and get a shuttle up to the condos - we did this many times.
Disclaimer: we ski over Spring Break when it's warm and sunny in the late afternoon a lot!

We did Saddleback in 2006 and loved it , we are going to book them again. We did the half day with lunch and it was tops! They pick up and return you to your condo.
I second this. Our hosts set us up with a full day here - snowmobiling, tubing and the sleigh ride dinner. Everything was fun and we felt like family by the end of the day. A great Steamboat experience!
I'd plan to use the shuttle if you are at the Storm Meadow Club buildings. Though you can basically ski in/out it's a hike to the base area, especially with kids. As far as activities go, hit the Old Town Hot Springs, downtown. Maybe combine with a kid friendly dinner at Johnny B Goode's diner for burgers and shakes. Also there is a lot more shopping and dining downtown than at the mountain area. The free SST bus runs frequently. There are two cinemas, one downtown and the nicer, newer one at Wildhorse.
Cheers!
i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.
Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.
