Whenever I go to Steamboat I am immediatly hit with the high altitude and it always stops me from taking the gondola up or going to the top on my first couple of days. Any suggestions on how to prevent the dizziness and shortness of breath?

Check with your doctor. He/she might suggest scarpolomine patches or some other drug. Beyond that, drink plenty of water, no alcohol, and get plenty of rest and take tylenol or advil. Really Steamboat isn't that high an altitute, especially compared to Summit County and Eagle County.

I can't speak about the dizziness, but the shortness of breath is just something that takes time if you are not acclimated. If you arrive at altitude in excellent physical condition, stay well hydrated and rested the time frame will be shorter. I've always been surprised at how winded I get the first day even though I've trained hard all fall. You just have to be patient with the shortness of breath. That being said, I've never let that hold me back, but I never had to deal with dizziness unless it was skiing in white out or fog conditions. Enjoy your trip.

As mentioned above, hydration is the real key. My mom is in her 70s and always had problems until we finally impressed upon her that she really needed to make a conscious effort to drink plenty of extra water beginning several days before the trip. Ditto on a little advil or tylenol. Also avoid alcohol and limit caffine for the first couple of days.

My 9 year old is famous for getting sick on ski trips! Two years ago we landed in Denver at 8 and she was throwing up as we drove into the foothills by 9 a.m. heading to the Boat.

Last year I read up a lot more on this and strictly enforced the "WATER, WATER and MORE WATER" the week before we left. I had her drinking bottles of water at home every day.

We flew into Hayden and she was 100% fine. NEVER even felt badly! This is after 6 previous ski trips w/sickness every single year. I can't stress enough the importance of over-hydrating prior to the trip! For a full week in advance!

For about the last 10 years, I have had a problem adjusting to altitude. Last year I drank lotsa water starting about 1 week before the trip. It did seem to help. Also, make sure the place you are staying provides a humidifier.

i think we are going to the Sheraton for the Christmas buffet. Others have suggested the Ore House, Cafe Diva alos. Yes book ahead of time. thats what i will be doing next week.

Usually kids don't want to wear the hood thing, but carry it in your pocket just in case. If it's really cold once you get on there on the slopes, I'll bet you big money that'll change.

Hard to predict of course but history is on your side. Be glad you didn't plan a trip around opening day at Vail today. They've got only one run open.

Temps have been great for snowmaking and we definitely have more snow this year than we had last year. I wouldn't worry, we tend to get dumped on in December. Here's a good article about late starts and how the season turns out.

I have been checking the cameras lately, and there does not appear to be alot of snow on the mountain, and not much in the forecast? Getting nervous about our trip out December 18th. Anything to worry about?

I agree with the balaclava. If your boys are going to wear helmets, which they should, then you can buy a nice under helmet hat/balaclava, a must in Steamboat. The key to keeping warm on the mountain is layers. (and toe warmers!)

I ski with my boys every January in Steamboat (now 10 & 8) and they wear the whole kit every day since they stay up top most the whole day ... base layer top and bottom, fleece top (& bottom if it's Arctic cold), and down jacket. They used to wear...
