It is a day of changes here in Steamboat. Good changes.
It’s that time of the year where the morning snow conditions rely heavily on what things were like at the mountain the afternoon before. We had amazing weather this weekend offering us fun and slushy spring skiing under a beautiful Colorado bluebird sky. Most of the mountain was very soft at lift closing yesterday, and lower overnight temperatures allowed that snow to freeze keeping the snowpack steady. Since it is an overcast morning here in Steamboat, the snow is staying a bit firm so far and not allowing for those slushy turns we have enjoyed recently. It was still a fun morning making fast turns on empty groomers with the cool mountain air greeting my face. The best bet for good turns early in the day are runs that don’t see a lot of late-afternoon sun, like Rudi’s and Cyclone.
Although conditions this morning are not as nice as we have seen in the past few days, I am very pleased with what was out there because change is in the air. High clouds and a cold breeze tell me some weather is headed our way, and the forecast is saying the same thing. It has been a while since we have seen some fresh snow around here, and a nice storm would be a very welcome event. If all goes well, we could be sitting on close to a foot of snow by the end of the week! Do your snow dance so we can keep celebrating the winter season in Steamboat!
Pick of the Mountain today is Buddy’s Run: fun and carvable snow (especially up high) made for some fun turns on the corduroy.
Keep watching that forecast. It is spring in the Rockies, and anything is possible!
