Catching the Fall Glory
Fall is one of my very favorite times in Steamboat, when just a drive through town is awe inspiring. The vivid shades from green to yellow to flashes of crimson against our bright blue sky make me stop and stare. It’s time to catch the warm days between storms and take advantage of the last beautiful hikes and bike rides before winter descends.
The gondola is open for one more weekend, so let’s hope for a last beautiful hurrah. I’d love to have one more hike on the Sunshine Loop Trail before the big snows come.
The mid afternoons, when the sun is its warmest and the trails are quiet, are my favorite times to hike or run on the yellow brick road of aspen leaves. I love watching the metamorphosis of this spectacular color spectrum.
On a recent trip to Mad Creek, I feel like I saw every autumn hue imaginable. The images we can capture, but the smell of sun-warmed leaves, the sound of a rushing creek and the wind that foretells the next storm need to be experienced in person.
In these moments, when I am surrounded by only beauty, my heart fills with the deepest gratitude that this is my home. Nature’s constancy, the flow of the river, animals that instinctively adapt and flow with the change of seasons are reminders that life keeps on keepin’ in spite of external forces.
Even if you think you have too much to do, get out there on the last warm autumn days. That little walk with your dog among the aspens or stolen hour on the trail will make your week.
