Bacon Friday. Yes, this is a thing.
Raving about Steamboat’s sweet snow over recent days has been filled with giggles and deep approval – all spilling from the mouths of sun-drenched faces. As a working stiff, I was sad to miss that spring blast. But I felt pretty lucky to get up on the mountain this morning. Eight inches of snow in the past week and warm temps are keeping the skiing fun!
Because, it’s definitely spring! I drove past three pairs of greater sandhill cranes within sight of the ski area this morning. If you aren’t aware of our favorite feathered neighbor — these are the 5-foot-tall birds you will spy enjoying wiggly worms and other crawly things in all that lush green haymeadow swamp on the valley floor this time of year.
Even the Yampa River Botanic Park opened yesterday! As the director said to me last night: “I love this! Ski in the morning, garden in the afternoon!”
Follow the sun. Ski the groom. It’s breezy up top this morning — maybe a sign of the predicted precipitation to come? I don’t want to jinx it, but some of our ski buddies to the west saw significant snow out of this flow. At the moment however, skies are pretty darn blue and none of those wispy clouds look threatening. Enjoy your last lower mountain laps this weekend, because after Sunday we’re slated for the download.
As your Girl Friday, I feel it’s time I give a shout out to Bacon Friday. Storm Peak lifties get my appreciation prize this year. The early-morning smells of bacon wafting from their lift shack on Friday mornings cast the scent of an extra delicious day upon Steamboat. It’s all bacon and smiles over there…and for this, I salute you, lifties!
We’re deep into Springalicious now. Happenings around Steamboat won’t disappoint anyone this weekend. Art lovers get a warm downtown stroll for First Friday Artwalk tonight. Con Brio is rocking Gondola Square for a free aprés ski concert on Saturday. The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra is performing a two-night run of “Phoenix Rising” – and classical music talent really runs deep in this town. Last but not least, everybody’s favorite fundraiser is Saturday night at the Chief, where we go out and support our killer summer concert series…Keepin’ it Free.
Let’s all put our minds together and chant to the atmosphere for one last powder day.
